Introduction to HTML

The common markup language used to create and design web pages is HTML or Hyper Text Markup Language. It acts as the foundation for the World Wide Web content structure. The elements on a web page are defined by HTML using a system of tags denoted by angled brackets (< >). Headings, paragraphs, pictures, links, lists and other elements are examples of these elements.

Thanks to HTML, web browsers can understand the structure of content organization and meaning. Developers can create documents with multimedia elements such as headings, paragraphs, images and links. The elements of the hierarchical structure are nested within one another to produce a logical and well-organized layout.

How to Run an HTML Program

1. Choose a text editor:

Choosing the right text editor is essential to learning HTML programming. There are several choices, each with unique features and user interfaces. Among developers, Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, and Atom are a few of their preferred options when making your decision. Consider elements like code completion, syntax highlighting and overall user experience.

2. Save files with the .html extension:

Some minor differences exist between text editors regarding how to save a file ending in .html. The general procedures are still the same, though. To save your HTML file for the first time or perform a save-as operation, just add ".html" to the end of your selected filename. If your file is called index, for instance, save it as "index.html."

3. Why is the.html Extension Useful?

To identify a file type and inform the system that it contains HTML code, a file should have the.html extension. HTML files are separate from other documents by their simple but crucial naming convention. A file saved with the.html extension is like sending a message to the computer saying, "Hey, this is an HTML file, and it should be treated as such."

Basic HTML Structure

1. Declaration: <! DOCTYPE html>

A declaration that tells the browser what version of HTML is being used appears at the beginning of every HTML document. The most widely used declaration to signify that a document complies with the HTML5 standard is <!DOCTYPE html>. This declaration guarantees proper rendering and compatibility with various browsers.

2. <html> Tag

An HTML document root element, the <html> tag, contains all the page content. It places other necessary elements like the <head> and <body>.

3. <head> Section

The <head> section is contained inside the <html> tag. This section includes linked stylesheets, scripts, character set declarations and the page title as meta-data for the HTML document. Although the content inside the <head> is essential to the page's appearance and functionality, users cannot see it directly.

4. <body> Section

The HTML document's primary content can be found within the <body> tag. The <body> section contains everything you want users to see, including text, images, links, etc. This is where your webpage design and structure come to life.

5. Save your file

After we write the html code, we can save the file in the .html extension format with a suitable name so we can run the file easily. The system is informed that the file contains HTML code by this extension. One way to save it would be as "index.html."

6. Open in a web browser

Open the saved file in a web browser to view your HTML program. To open the HTML file with your preferred browser, right-click on it, select "Open with," and then choose it. Another option is to just drag the file into the open browser window.

7. Troubleshooting Typical Problems

While it is usually easy to run HTML files locally, there are a few common problems you might run into. Here are some pointers for troubleshooting:

  • Check file path: Verify that the HTML file is located in the correct directory by checking the file path. The file path must be correct for the file to be found and displayed by the browser.
  • Verify HTML Syntax: Look for any syntax errors in your HTML code by reviewing it twice. A single mistake can cause your entire page to not render correctly.
  • Browser Cache: Try cleaning your browser cache or loading the page in incognito mode if changes aren't reflected.
  • File Permissions: Verify that you possess the rights to open and view the HTML file.
