To calculate the percent of any number, we will first learn about or get familiar with the concept of percentages. So, in this article, we will learn basic information about percentages and how to calculate any number's Percentage.

Percentage

The word Percentage combines two Latin words: "Per" and "Centum"; both words have different meanings. The word Centrum has the meaning which is "Hundred," and the word "Per" has the meaning "by." So, combining these, we can say that the word has a meaning, i.e., by a hundredth. So, using this, the definition of Percentage can be defined as the value of something that is compared with the hundredth of its value.

Remember that we calculated our overall marks out of our total marks as students. There we used the word Percentage; we used, to sum up all the marks we got in our particular subjects, divide them by the total marks of subjects, and then multiply the result by hundred (100).

For Example: Let us consider that we got 80 marks in Hindi out of 100, 93 marks in Mathematics out of 100, 84 marks in English out of 100, 95 marks in Science out of 100, and 92 marks in Physical Education out of 100. When we sum up all the marks of each subject, we get 444, divide it by 500, the total marks, and multiply it by 100 to get the marks percentage.

(444/ 500) * 100 = 88.8 %

So that child got 88.8 % in his examination.
