Mettupalayam is both a town and a municipality in the Coimbatore District. Mettupalayam is located on the Bhavani River bank at the Nilgiri Mountains' foot. This town is the interchange between the Nilagiri passenger line and the wide gauge railway, allowing people to transfer between the two lines. Mettupalayam is connected to the state capital of Coimbatore with the Nilgiri Express, also known as the Blue Mountain Express. To reach the Nilgiri Mountains, travelers may use one of two Ghat routes that both begin at Mettupalayam. Fresh fruits and vegetables are transported down from the Mettupalayam hills and distributed across the majority of the district of Coimbatore.

It is said that the Pandavas sought the Deity's blessing before engaging in battle against the seven Aravalli Sisters, who were using witchcraft to torture people. Local mythology links the Vanbadrakaliamman Temple with the tale of the seven Aravalli sisters.

The idol in this temple depict Bhimasen, a character from the Mahabharata, and Pagasooran, a demon whom Bhimasen defeated with the assistance of Vanabadrakaliamman.
