Anita Desai is from a mixed-race family and was given the name Anita Mazumdar when she was born on June 24, 1937, in Mussoorie, British India (now India). She received a foundational education at Queen Mary's Higher Secondary School that gave her a grasp of the English language.

She pursued her love of literature by attending Miranda House, Delhi University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She acquired English at a young age, and it would eventually be her preferred literary language.
