Early Life of Ranveer Singh

Ranveer was born in the family of Anju Singh Bhavnani and Ajit Singh Bhavnani on July 6, 1985, in Mumbai. Ranveer Singh has a sister named Ritika Bhavnani. We can trace the history of Ranveer's family back to present-day Pakistan. After the partition of India, his grandparents moved to India and then settled in Mumbai.

In interviews, Ranveer Singh revealed that he shortened his name because his full name was a little long and contained many syllables. Also, he wanted a name more suitable for an artist.

Since his childhood, Ranveer Singh has been very interested in acting, and thus he regularly participated in stage competitions during his school studies. After completing his schooling, Ranveer took admission in the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics but soon decided to drop out and focus on his career as a creative writer. Later, he moved to the U.S. and joined Indiana University to complete his B.A. (Bachelor of Arts). During his college, Ranveer took part in acting shows and related activities.

In 2007, Ranveer Singh returned to India after completing his graduation and started working as a copywriter for advertising firms in Mumbai. Despite starting his work as a copywriter, he never let go of his ambition to become an actor. He regularly auditioned for all kinds of roles in movies but did not succeed in getting any major roles.

Bollywood Career

The dedication and hard work of Ranveer Singh finally paid off in 2010. Finally, he got an opportunity to audition for a lead role in the movie Band Baaja Baarat produced by the Yash Raj Films. Aaditya Chopra, vice president of Yash Raj Films, was instantly impressed by Ranveer's acting skills and looks. But Maneesh Sharma, the writer, and director of Band Baaja Baarat, was unsure about casting Ranveer Singh in the movie. Therefore, Ranveer was called several times for auditions in the following weeks, and finally, Ranvir succeeded in impressing the director.

Later, the production house announced Ranveer Singh in the lead role of Bittoo Sharma along with Anushka Sharma in the role of Shruti Kakkar. Ranveer Singh received high praise from critics for his portrayal of Bittoo Sharma. Bollywood Pundits predicted that the movie would not perform well at Box-office, but the appreciation from the audience proved everyone wrong. The movie became an instant hit in 2010 and collected Rs.31 crores on a production cost of only Rs.10 crores. In 2014, the Yash Raj Films also announced a remake of the movie in Telugu, starring Nani and Vaani Kapoor in the lead roles of Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma.

The success of Band Baaja Baarat paved the way to advance the career of Ranveer Singh in Bollywood. Aditya Chopra and Maneesh Sharma signed him for their next movie, Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl, in 2011. The movie revolved around the lead character of Ricky Bahl, played by Ranveer Singh, who cons women in different parts of India for a living but finally finds his match. The movie also starred Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Dipannita Sharma, and Aditi Sharma opposite Ranveer Singh.

The next critical success for Ranveer Singh came with the release of Lootera opposite Sonakshi Sinha in 2013. Ranveer Singh also worked in the 2015 comedy-drama movie Dil Dhadakne Do which Zoya Akhtar directed. The movie had several stars like Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, and others.

Ranveer Singh worked with Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films after a long time in the 2016 movie Befikre. The movie received mixed reviews from the audiences and the critics. In 2018, Rohit Shetty and Karan Johar cast Ranveer Singh in Simmba along with Sara Ali Khan. The movie received mixed reviews from critics but succeeded in performing well at the box office.

Ranveer Singh again partnered with Zoya Akhtar for Gully Boy, one of the most anticipated movies of 2019. The movie narrates the story of Indian Rappers Divine and Naezy. Along with movies, Ranveer decided to debut on Television with his quiz show The Big Picture, which aired in 2022 on Colors T.V.

The biggest opportunity after Ranveer's initial success in Bollywood came with the start of his partnership with Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Sanjay Leela Bhansali cast Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in his romantic drama Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela in 2013. Ranveer Singh was the highlight of this movie for his intense and power-packed portrayal of Ram and his chemistry with Deepika Padukone. Also, this movie became the biggest commercial success of Ranveer's Bollywood career and collected more than Rs.200 crores on a production cost of around Rs.50 crores.

In 2015, Sanjay decided to partner again with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the historical drama Bajirao Mastani along with Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles. The plot of the story revolves around the love story of Peshwa Baji Rao and Mastani. The movie proved to be one of the biggest Bollywood Hits and collected more than Rs.350 crores on domestic and international box-office. Just like his previous movie with Bhansali, Ranveer Singh's performance was highly appreciated by the audience and critics. He was also awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 2015 for his performance.

The latest collaboration of Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Ranveer Singh was in another historical drama, Padmaavat, in 2018. Ranveer Singh played the role of Alauddin Khilji, one of the most powerful Sultans of the Delhi Sultanate in Medieval India. The movie also starred Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati and Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh. Padmaavat broke all previous Box-office records held by Ranveer Singh's movies and collected Rs.585 crores after its release. Ranveer Singh won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor in 2018 for his epic performance in Padmaavat.
