Introduction

Shiv Kumar was an Indian poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, translator, and critic. He wrote 12 collections of poetry, 5 novels, 2 collections of stories, one play, and a few books of literary criticism. He was honored with Padma Bhushan and awards from the Sahitya Akademi and the Royal Society of Literature in London. The Career of Shiv K Kumar

He started working as a lecturer at D.A.V. College, Lahore, in 1943 but moved to Delhi after the partition of India. He briefly worked as a lecturer at Hansraj College, Delhi, and as a program officer at All India Radio. He left India in 1950 to enter Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he completed his Ph.D. in English literature in 1956. The subject of his dissertation was Bergson's 'Stream of Consciousness Novel.' His research advisor was David Daiches. While at Cambridge, he was mentored by the renowned British critic F. R. Leavis.

Shiv K. Kumar was a professor of English literature at Osmania University, Hyderabad, and the University of Hyderabad. He was a National English Lecturer at the UGC from 1972-74, the first Dean of Humanities at the University of Hyderabad, and the head of the English department. He retired as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad in 1980.

He was a Visiting Professor at Drake University, Hofstra University, Marshall University, Oklahoma University, and Northern Iowa and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at those institutions. He was also a Fulbright Visiting Fellow at Yale University. In 1981, he was nominated as a jury member for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in the USA.
