Introduction

Shiv Kumar was an Indian poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, translator, and critic. He wrote 12 collections of poetry, 5 novels, 2 collections of stories, one play, and a few books of literary criticism. He was honored with Padma Bhushan and awards from the Sahitya Akademi and the Royal Society of Literature in London. In addition to his father, Bishan Das Kumar, a former headmaster, his grandpa, the late Tulsi Das Kumar, was a teacher. Krishna is represented by the letter "K."

He's considered the most brilliant of India's poets and worked as a schoolteacher, critic, and author. So, it's no surprise that his poetry has many of the same intellectual underpinnings as the great Western poets - T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and so on. He also shares a strong autobiographical and confessional style with writers like Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, and John Berryman.

Shiv K. Kumar was born in 1921 in Lahore in British India. He completed his secondary education in 1937 at the Dayanand English Vedic High School in Lahore. He completed his undergraduate studies in 1943 at Government College, Lahore, and his graduate studies in 1950 at Forman Christian College, New Delhi.

The Career of Shiv K Kumar

He started working as a lecturer at D.A.V. College, Lahore, in 1943 but moved to Delhi after the partition of India. He briefly worked as a lecturer at Hansraj College, Delhi, and as a program officer at All India Radio. He left India in 1950 to enter Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he completed his Ph.D. in English literature in 1956. The subject of his dissertation was Bergson's 'Stream of Consciousness Novel.' His research advisor was David Daiches. While at Cambridge, he was mentored by the renowned British critic F. R. Leavis.

Shiv K. Kumar was a professor of English literature at Osmania University, Hyderabad, and the University of Hyderabad. He was a National English Lecturer at the UGC from 1972-74, the first Dean of Humanities at the University of Hyderabad, and the head of the English department. He retired as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad in 1980.

He was a Visiting Professor at Drake University, Hofstra University, Marshall University, Oklahoma University, and Northern Iowa and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at those institutions. He was also a Fulbright Visiting Fellow at Yale University. In 1981, he was nominated as a jury member for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in the USA.
