Shehzad Poonawalla is an Indian civil rights activist who used to be a member of the Indian National Congress party; currently, he is a member of the BJP. Shehzad is well-known for speaking out against a particular kind of politics called dynasty politics, where political power stays within the same family. Early Life and Family
Shehzad Poonawalla was born to Yasmeen and Sarfaraz Poonawalla. He also has an older brother named Tehseen Poonawalla. However, Shehzad and Tehseen's relationship turned sour when Shehzad openly opposed the practice of dynasty politics within the Congress party and questioned the fairness of Rahul Gandhi's election as its leader. This disagreement caused a rift between the two brothers, leading them to sever ties.
Shehzad Poonawalla has been involved in more than 25 cases in courts, the NHRC (National Human Rights Commission), and the NCM (National Commission for Minorities). These cases focus on stopping hateful speeches that target different communities, fighting against discrimination based on religion, and ensuring the protection of minority groups.
In 2013, he highlighted a case of unfair treatment in housing in Mumbai. He took on several cases where people from the Muslim, transgender, and Dalit communities were denied housing and job opportunities. He also worked on cases related to mob lynching, raising the instance of Junaid's lynching in Haryana to the NHRC, which then questioned the Haryana police based on his petition.
There was a case where Dr. Swamy was accused of making hateful speeches, and Shehzad Poonawalla played a role in that case, which resulted in Dr. Swamy being released on bail.
Shehzad also advocated for the rights of Hindus in Bangladesh, addressing their persecution with the Bangladesh High Commission and the Government of India in 2014.
In 2015-16, he took legal action against filmmaker Ram Gopal Verma for disrespectful comments about Lord Ganesha and got the director to apologize and withdraw the comments.
Furthermore, in 2017, Poonawalla wrote to the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, urging them to grant minority status and rights to Hindus, especially Kashmiri Pandits, in Punjab and the Kashmir Valley.
