He is married to Mana Shetty and has two children, Athiya Shetty, a girl, and Ahan Shetty, a boy. Athiya and Ahan both made their acting debuts, Athiya in Hero (2015) and Ahan in Sajid Nadiadwala's Tadap (2021), a Hindi version of the Telugu film RX 100. Mana is the founder of an NGO for underprivileged children. Shetty is a kickboxing black belt. He owns clothing stores as well as eateries that serve Udupi cuisine.

At the age of 31, he made his Hindi cinema debut in Balwaan alongside Divya Bharti in 1992. The film helped him preserve his image as a Bollywood action hero. Shetty has been actively interested in real estate and restaurant sector in addition to being a member of this project. Sunil also acted in his second Tamil film, Darbar, along with Rajinikanth. Shetty starred in Sanjay Gupta's mafia drama film Mumbai Saga, which was released on March 19, 2021. He was most recently seen in Kiran Korrapati's Ghani, which was released on April 8th.

Sunil Shetty invested an unknown sum in Fittr, a Pune-based online health and fitness startup, in 2019. Fittr was founded in January 2016 by Jitendra Chouksey as a Facebook group to solve the issues in the fitness business. In Mumbai, the actor owns Mischief Dining Bar and Club H2O. Both locations are up and operating. He shares ownership of the water adventure park connected to Cafe H2O. In 2010, he closed Mischief Bar and started a new restaurant named Little Italy. Sunil's father owned the restaurant when it was an Udipi restaurant. He then transformed it into a bar, and then back into a restaurant with a different name with his father's consent.

After the 9/11 attack on the USA, the officials were on high alert. At that point of time, the actor was growing a beard for his upcoming movie Kaante. Once he arrived at Los Angeles airport with that look, the security took him into custody as a suspect. After a lot of hardship and explanation, he was able to get out of the problem.

Sunil Shetty and casting director Mukesh Chhabra worked together to work in a business. However, there is a rumour that due to some conflict between them Mukesh Chabbra left Sunil Shetty and moved to some other place. Reports also claim that they got into a physical fight however when the actor was asked about the matter, he totally neglected it and told that it was just a rumour spreading around.
