Ranbir Kapoor is one of the top Bollywood Actors who has been a part of several successful Bollywood movies. Many artists and their families have been a part of Bollywood. But the Kapoor family holds a distinct and prestigious position in the history of Bollywood.

Ranbir Kapoor belongs to the third generation of the Kapoor family active in the Hindi film industry, Bollywood. In the following article, we will talk about the life of Ranbir Kapoor in detail.

Early Life of Ranbir Kapoor

On September 28, 1982 Ranbir Kapoor was born in the family of Bollywood actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. Both of his parents are amongst the top actors of Bollywood in the past. Ranbir's Great-Grandfather, Raj Kapoor one of the first personalities to bring the modern cinema to India. He was known as Showman of India. Ranbir Kapoor also has an elder sister Ridhima Kapoor who is a fashion and interior designer.

Ranbir's uncle, Randheer Kapoor is also one of the most celebrated veteran Bollywood actors. The famous Bollywood actresses, Kareena Kapoor and Karishma Kapoor are first cousin of Ranbeer Kapoor and thus they all can be seen together in different family events.

Ranbir Kapoor completed his initial studies from the Bombay Scottish School situated in the Mahim area of South Bombay. He has revealed in several interviews that he was not very good in his studies but was always interested in sports and therefore he always had a keen interest in playing football. Also, Ranbir has told that during his childhood he faced several mental health issues due to the stressful relationship of his parents. And after witnessing such conditions a volcano of emotions was built inside him. Therefore, he decided to use this energy in the film industry.

When Ranbir Kapoor completed his matriculation exam, Rishi Kapoor offered him to assist in the direction of film Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999. As a result of closely working on this movie, Ranbir's relation with his father, Rishi Kapoor improved and they developed a closer bond than earlier.

Later, Ranbir Kapoor took admission in the HR College affiliated with the HNSC University situated in the Churchgate area of South Mumbai for his pre-university education. After completing his schooling from the HR College, Ranbir Kapoor decided to follow into the footsteps of his family and enter the film industry. But Ranbir felt that he should start his career in Bollywood after taking a formal training of Film Making and Acting. As a result, he moved to New York City and took admission in the School of Visual Arts situated in Gramercy Park. Then, Ranbir also trained himself in the art of method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Although, he was not good at studies during his childhood, Ranbir passed as one of the brightest students from these film Institutions. He also learned the art of direction and took part in two short movies, Passion to Love and India 1964 at the film school itself.

Return to India

After staying in New York City for a brief time, Ranbir finally decided to come back to India in 2005. By this time, Ranbir had made up his mind to make an acting career in Bollywood.

In 2005, Ranbir got the opportunity to work as an assistant director to the successful Bollywood director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was working on his movie Black and Ranbir Kapoor was given the responsibility to assist Sanjay Leela Bhansali on this movie. Ranbir Kapoor described his tenure as an assistant director to be full of hardships and dedication.

He worked in 16 hours long shifts for Black and got to learn about the fundamentals involved in making a Bollywood movie. In an interview, Ranbir revealed that one of his motives for assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black was to impress him so that Sanjay Leela Bhansali might cast him in his future projects.

Bollywood Career of Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor finally succeeded in impressing Sanjay Leela Bhansali through his dedication, hardwork and passion for film making of the sets of Black. As a result, Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave the once in a lifetime opportunity by offering Ranbir Kapoor the lead role in his next movie Sawaariya in 2007. The movie also starred Sonam Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in lead roles. Bollywood Debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali could be the best opportunity for any newcomer in Bollywood and Ranbir Kapoor also knew about the high trust of Bhansali in him. With Saawariya, Sony Pictures Entertainment became the first Hollywood production house to produce a Bollywood movie. The production facilities of Sony Pictures Entertainment coupled with the reputation of Sanjay Leela Bhansali made Saawariya one of the most anticipated movies of 2007.

The plot of the movie was based on the characters of Ranbir Kapoor as Raj and Sonam Kapoor as Sakina. Saawariya begins with the meeting of characters portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee as Gulab. Raj is a very kind hearted person and treats Gulab and other prostitutes with respect. As a result, Gulab suggest Raj a place to live in the house of Lillian. Lillian is an older women whose son is in the army and she lives alone. She develops an instant connection with Raj and permits him to live in his home.

During his stay at Lilllian's, Raj meets Sakina portayed by Sonam Kapoor. He protects Sakina from the hooligans in the area and they both become friends but soon Raj falls in love with Sakina. Raj finally decides to confess his love for Sakina and invites her to meet at the Clock Tower (the favourite place of Sakina in the movie). Before Raj could confess his feelings, Sakina reveals that she deeply loves another character, Imaan and says that she is waiting for Imaan.

After hearing about Sakina's love for Imaan, Raj refrains from confessing his love to Sakina. Later, he consults Gulab and she advises Raj to present his true feelings for Sakina and not worry about being rejected by her. So, Raj decides to make a grand proposal in front of the whole neighbourhood to Sakina. He sings her favorite song Saawariya which became one of the most iconic songs of modern day Bollywood. But Sakina leave to meet Imaan. Raj tries to convince Sakina that there is no Imaan and she should forget about him.

Finally, Sakina decides to accept Raj's proposal. But as the movie concludes and both return to their home, they see Imaan waiting for Sakina on the road. Sakina who deeply loved Imaan hesitate to go towards Imaan but Raj tells her to follow her heart and reunite with Imaan.

The movie was expected to perform good at the box office as well as among the critics. But the movie failed to attract audience to the movie theaters and suffered a huge loss on the financial front. The critical reception of the movie was also not very impressive. Many critics declared Saawariya as one of the biggest failures for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The only positive from the movie was the charming performance of Ranbir Kapoor. He instantly became a celebrity crush of thousands of girls only after single movie.

The failure of debut movie can prove to be very harmful for any actor. But Ranbir Kapoor was destined to make to make it big in Bollywood. So, in 2008, Yash Raj Films offered him the lead role in Bachna Ae Haseeno which succeded at Box office and received positive reviews from the critics.

The success of Bachna Ae Haseeno has opened many opportunities for Ranbir Kapoor. He released three movies in 2009 and all of them performed well at the Box Office. These movies were Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Wake Up Sid, and Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahaani. The next big breakthrough for Ranbir Kapoor came with the release of multi starcast movie Rajneeti. The movie's starcast included big names like Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Arjun Rampal, Katrina Kaif, and Manoj Bajpayee. Despite of several established actors in the movie, Ranbir successfully left an impact on audience with his performance.

Partnership with Imtiaz Ali

The director-actor pair of Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor has given some of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed of Bollywood. The partnership started with Rockstar in 2011 which followed the story of Ranbir's character from a roadside singer to a global artist.

Rockstar emerged as the biggest Bollywood movie of 2011 and bagged Ranbir the award for Best Actor by Filmfare. Imtiaz Ali again partnered with Ranbir Kapoor for his next movie Tamasha in 2015. The movie starred Deepika Padukone alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Tamasha failed badly at the box office but received critical appraise its story telling and screenplay.

The most recent release of Ranbir Kapoor is also the most successful movie of his career. Sanju released in 2018 and was based on the life events of Bollywood Actor, Sanjay Dutt. Ranbir Kapoor presented a perfect example of method acting in this movie and presented an accurate portrayal of Sanjay Dutt on screen.
