The Kapoor lineage. As the younger daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita (known informally as "Bebo"), she was born in Bombay on September 21, 1980. She is Prithviraj Kapoor's great-granddaughter Raj Kapoor's paternal granddaughter, and Hari Shivdasani's maternal granddaughter. Her uncle and cousin are actors Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, the latter of whom is also an actress. Anna Karenina, the novel that her mother read while pregnant, inspired the name "Kareena," Kapoor claims. Her father is of Punjabi Hindu descent, while her mother is of Sindhi Hindu and British descent, resulting in her having a blended background. Nargis and Meena Kumari were two actresses who influenced Kapoor's early interest in performing; she referred to herself as "a very mischievous, spoiled youngster." Despite this, her father was opposed to women appearing in films because he felt it went against the traditional roles of mother and wife. The outcome of this was that her parents had a falling out and ultimately divorced. Career

Her feature film début was in the war drama Refugee, which she starred in 2000. However, it was the release of Karan Johar's directorial Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum in 2001 that was a watershed moment in her career, in which she appeared alongside Bollywood superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Her rendition of the character "Poo" is still recognized today. Despite the fact that her films produced between 2001 and 2003 were economically successful, critics believe she still has more ground to explore.
