The Kapoor lineage. As the younger daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita (known informally as "Bebo"), she was born in Bombay on September 21, 1980. She is Prithviraj Kapoor's great-granddaughter Raj Kapoor's paternal granddaughter, and Hari Shivdasani's maternal granddaughter. Her uncle and cousin are actors Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, the latter of whom is also an actress. Anna Karenina, the novel that her mother read while pregnant, inspired the name "Kareena," Kapoor claims. Her father is of Punjabi Hindu descent, while her mother is of Sindhi Hindu and British descent, resulting in her having a blended background. Nargis and Meena Kumari were two actresses who influenced Kapoor's early interest in performing; she referred to herself as "a very mischievous, spoiled youngster." Despite this, her father was opposed to women appearing in films because he felt it went against the traditional roles of mother and wife. The outcome of this was that her parents had a falling out and ultimately divorced. After that, Karisma was raised by her mother, who worked many jobs to provide for her and her sisters until she made her acting debut in 1991. Her parents reunited in October 2007 after living apart for many years. Kapoor said, "My father is also an essential part in my life, even though we didn't see him frequently in our early years, we are a family today." Welham Girls' School in Dehradun was her next stop after Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai. For her mother's sake, she went to the school, although she later revealed that she liked it. According to Kapoor, she was not interested in academics, despite receiving excellent ratings in all of her studies except mathematics. She returned to Mumbai after high school to attend Mithibai College, where she majored in business for the next two years before completing her degree. As a result, she was on the lookout for more demanding assignments. Then there was Chameli, which was published in 2004. She established herself as an actress to keep an eye out for as a result of this film.
