We must understand the proper way to use tenses in sentences to structure a sentence and communicate the information. Types of Tenses

Present Definition

In English, there are three tenses:

Past tense

The past tense describes an action, an occurrence, or a previous state of being and must include a time marker to indicate when the action or event occurred.

  • Structural formula: Subject + verb (2nd form) + object.
  • Examples: We went to Agra yesterday.

Present tense

The simple present tense or the present tense is one of the most basic tenses in English. When describing something that is happening right now, something that is routinely completed, or a condition that exists generally or currently exists, we use the present tense.

  • Structural formula: Subject + verb (s/es) + object.
  • Examples: She lives in Japan.

Future tense

The future tense is a verb tense used to express a future occurrence or action that has not yet occurred but is expected to occur soon.

  • Structural formula: Subject + Shall + verb + object.
  • Example: I will meet you tomorrow.

Additionally, there are four types of each of the three tenses:

  • Simple or indefinite
  • Continuous
  • Perfect
  • Perfect Continuous

Present Tense

Present tense means an event or action that occurs in the present. It depicts the subject's present behavior or emotional condition within a particular context. The present tense is utilized to discuss what occurs in the present time.

Verbs are used in the present tense for a variety of purposes which includes:

  • Describing actions or states which exist in the present (right now)
  • Stating that actions or states occur regularly or routinely
  • Expressing thoughts, beliefs, or facts
  • Describing actions or states that started in the past and carried on into the present
  • Describing something that is happening right now and will go on in the future
  • Stating that an action or state is scheduled to occur in the future
  • Stating that a task is at present in progress
  • Describing that an event began earlier but continues to occur at the current time

Types of Present Tense

There are four primary types of present tenses in the English language:

  • Simple Present Tense: It is used to describe ongoing or regular behaviors.
  • Present Continuous Tense: It can be used to explain an ongoing action.
  • Present Perfect Tense: It indicates a finished action that affects the sentence's object or subject.
  • Present Perfect Continuous tense: It is used to talk about recent past actions that continue to take place.

Simple Present Tense The simple present tense of a verb can be used when the verb describes or represents an action that is currently occurring or frequently occurs. Subject + Verb(base form)/3rd person plural form
  • Mohan always bathes before going to school.
  • Abhilipsa completes her homework every day.
  • ·Meghna eats an apple every day.
Present Perfect Tense The Present Perfect Tense is used when a verb defines or expresses a past activity in the present tense. Subject + Helping Verb (have/has) + Past participle(main verb)
  • She has taken coffee.
  • He has gone to the store.
  • Kavya has brushed her teeth.
Present Continuous Tense The Present Continuous Tense is used when a verb describes or expresses an activity or situation that is occurring currently and will continue in the future. Subject + Helping Verb(am/is/are) + Main verb + ing
  • Her family is going to a function.
  • The boys are playing on the ground.
  • Maria is laughing out loud.
Present Perfect Continuous Tense The Present Perfect Continuous Tense can be used when a verb conveys or expresses an action that started in the past but is still being carried out in the present. Subject + Have/Has + Been + Verb+ ing
  • I have been operating this task for a week.
  • You have been studying German for a few months.
  • We have been waiting for an hour.

  • She doesn't regularly attend school.
  • You read this chapter.
  • Every morning I listen to music.
  • The Earth revolves around the sun.

Examples of Present Continuous Tense are:

  • The trainer is teaching the students.
  • Are there chirping sounds coming from the trees?
  • They are not going.
  • She has some individuals following her.

Examples of Present Perfect Tense are:

  • They had watched this film.
  • I have never visited there.
  • Has he finished his work?
  • Have they eaten their lunch?
  • This lesson has already been completed.

Examples of Present Perfect Continuous Tense are:

  • We have been residing here since 1992.
  • It has been raining since the morning.
  • For the past two hours, the children have been studying.
  • Jack has been working on this project for five days.
  • Ben has not been eating his favorite food since 6:00 p.m.
